Greenhouses constructed with alternative materials protect plantation from heavy rainfalls
Since September, persistent rainfalls break records in Rio Grande do Sul. The farmer Francisco de Assis Neto, however, keeps calm. The heavy rainfalls have not affected the smallholder farmer’s plants because they are protected by the greenhouses he constructed.
“Thank God the rainstorms did not impact my production. One of my neighbors, who plants tobacco, lost a big part of his tillage due to those strong and persistent rainfalls. But my soil proved to be more resistant to these flash floods”, said Francisco de Assis Neto.
The farmer also used a technique to raise his beds in such a way that superfluous water runs off easily through deeper grooves and does not harm the plants.
